In Rajasthan, India, a child from the Dalit community has died after being beaten up by a school teacher for drinking water from a pot kept for the teacher. A nine-year-old boy died on Saturday.

Indian media NDTV reported that the police arrested the guilty teacher and charged him with murder. The sad incident took place on July 20 in a private school in Sayla village of Jalore district.

The boy, who suffered severe eye and ear injuries from the beating, was taken to Ahmedabad, about 300 km away, for treatment. The child died in the hospital on Saturday during treatment. The internet has been shut down in the area due to fears that the conflict will escalate.

Expressing grief over the incident, Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has directed the authorities to investigate it immediately. Justice will be ensured to the victim’s family as soon as possible. 5 lakh rupees will be given to the family from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund’, he tweeted.

A police team has been sent to Ahmedabad to conduct the post-mortem of the victim.
